Psst: We Actually Agree on a lot, It’s the D or R that Divides Us.
The most illogical and saddest part of the great American divide is that while polls show we are at our most divided since 1865, when you look at individual issues, there’s actually far more that unites us. For example, Reuters found that approximately 70–80% of Americans support the details of the infrastructure bill…but when Reuters politically labeled it and asked if people support the Biden infrastructure bill, the support dropped to 47%. We are so locked into our tribe that we will drop support for something we actually agree with simply because of the name on the top of the paper. It goes beyond specific bills and can extend to general wedge issues. For example:
Abortion: While the Christian Right powers new challenges to Roe v. Wade, a Pew Poll showed that 59% of Americans are pro-choice compared to only 39% who believe abortion should be illegal.
Immigration: Ipsos asked many questions about the immigration situation and when they broke down a variety of scenarios to legalize many illegal immigrants, almost 70% on average supported it. In fact, more than 60% of Republicans supported legalization of immigrants that are farm and essential workers as well as those fleeing war zones and natural disasters.
